Dear Governor Maura Healey,
We know you are a big fan of AI. “I embrace AI, I think it’s amazing. I think it’s transformational,” you said when announcing that Massachusetts would become the first state in the country to integrate ChatGPT across the executive branch.
This has made us curious. Did you use ChatGPT to write your new proposed social media legislation?
We ask because, while AI can be “transformational,” it is also routinely inaccurate, incapable of critical thinking, and can “hallucinate.”
When we first read your proposed social media legislation, we were confused. We know you are a smart person with a capable staff who can speak to experts and stakeholders while crafting legislation. So we were perplexed to find that your proposed bill is blatantly unconstitutional, laughably unworkable, and would benefit Big Tech companies while harming undocumented people, LGBTQ youth, and human rights.

Big Tech companies are doing real harm, and we deserve serious legislation to crack down on their abusive and predatory business practices. The Massachusetts Consumer Data Privacy Act, which has already passed the state senate, is a great example of this.
But your bill does not seem serious at all. In fact, it seems very much like a conglomeration of a bunch of the worst ideas put forward in other states, mashed together and then regurgitated into a proposed bill. In short, it seems a lot like the type of bill ChatGPT would write for you.
So, no shame, Governor! We know you are out and proud about your love of AI. So we just want to know…did you use it to write your new social media bill? And if you did, could you maybe ask some humans to help you fix it?
Because as it stands, you’ve proposed legislation that would supercharge Trump’s surveillance apparatus, benefit Big Tech, and punish kids and families. That doesn’t sound like you! Maybe it was the AI all along?
