Since 2018, Madison Square Garden has used and abused an extensive facial recognition technology to track visitors, especially ones billionaire owner James Dolan doesn’t like. Since then, fans have allegedly been stalked and banned for criticizing Dolan, working for the wrong law firm, and even being trans.
Fans shouldn’t have to give over our privacy to Dolan’s petty tyranny just to see our teams play. There’s a simple way to stop this: tell the New York City Council to ban facial recognition technology in public places!
Facial recognition not only exposes our sensitive info to Dolan’s whims, it puts our biometric data at broad risk. Madison Square Garden had a major data breach earlier this year that ended in the personal information of several million people being leaked. Facial recognition raises the stakes of these data breaches and can impact anyone who goes to the venue. Even if you don’t happen to find yourself a victim of Dolan’s personal wrath, you could be harmed by his massive surveillance system.
A majority of New York City Council members support a bill that would ban facial recognition technology in public places, but Speaker Julie Menin refuses to bring it to a vote. Mayor Mamdani supported a similar bill while he was a member of the New York State Assembly.
