Support data privacy in Massachusetts! Pass the Location Shield Act & MA Data Privacy Act
Massachusetts lawmakers are currently considering proposals that would ban the sale of our sensitive location data, as well as give us control over how our personal data is collected and shared. On April 9th, a joint committee in the state legislature will meet to discuss these measures. Urge your state legislators to support comprehensive privacy protections and pass these two bills: the Location Shield Act and Massachusetts Data Privacy Act.

Location Shield Act
It might not be a surprise to know that apps on your cell phone collect a ton of information about you. But most people don’t know about data brokers—the companies that collect this data and sell it to pretty much anyone willing to pay.
This can lead to highly personal information, including where we live, work, seek health care, and more, being accessible to people who could use it to harm us. All Massachusetts residents deserve to be safe and free from digital surveillance, harassment and violence, especially as threats of surveillance and censorship escalate on the federal level.
We need our lawmakers to ban this practice now. The Location Shield Act would ban the sale of your cell phone location data by companies and shady data brokers. Urge lawmakers to pass it as soon as possible.
Massachusetts Data Privacy Act
In addition to location data, we need all of our data protected, with informed consent in the data gathering process and the right to opt out of data collection, targeted advertising, and AI profiling. That’s what the Massachusetts Data Privacy Act promises. The MDPA would be a landmark bill, establishing long overdue rights to our data, creating a private right of action for privacy violations, and even creating a mandatory public registry for data brokers.
With state level protections in place, it’d be much harder for Trump and his Big Tech cronies to target and surveil Massachusetts residents. Plus, it keeps everyone safer from stalking, hacking, and doxxing.
