How Condition 50 is holding vulnerable communities hostage

Internet service providers have spent years, and millions of dollars, trying to kill California’s standard setting net neutrality protections. This law prevents ISPs from engaging in censorship while keeping the cost of internet access down.

Congress adopted the federal Broadband Equity, Access, And Deployment (BEAD) Program to enable rural and tribal communities to reliably and affordably access the internet. Trump is using the money to force California to give up the ability to protect Californians online, make internet access affordable, and ensure public safety. Trump is holding these communities hostage with Condition 50, a 14 year moratorium on enforcing net neutrality or utility style regulations on internet service providers.

California is uniquely positioned to lead on this issue: no state has stronger net neutrality protections or more resources to fight back. California must stand up to Trump by rejecting BEAD funding with Condition 50 and suing to remove it. Abandoning net neutrality will ultimately harm the communities BEAD funds are meant to help.
