Trump Pick Brendan Carr as FCC Chair is a disaster for human rights

Breaking news: President-elect Donald Trump has named Federal Communications Commissioner Brendan Carr as his pick to chair the FCC. Fight for the Future has been a leader in championing net neutrality and protecting free expression online. Our director, Evan Greer (she/her) is available for interviews, and issued the following statement: 

“Trump’s nomination of Brendan Carr, one of the co-authors of Project 2025, to head the FCC is more than just a reversal of popular policies like Net Neutrality. While falsely portraying himself as a free speech champion, Carr has made clear he actually wants the FCC to get more involved in policing online speech. Additionally, he’s champing at the bit to undo the good things that the FCC has been able to do recently, like changing the rules so that Big Telecom can discriminate against rural and low income communities. Carr wants to use his perch to funnel money to companies run by Trump cronies like Elon Musk, while punishing opponents by increasing their fees or ending subsidies and contracts. In short, Carr plans to use the full weight of the FCC to help billionaires and authoritarians while abandoning the agency’s actual mission of protecting the public interest.

For us, this is not about partisan politics. Fight for the Future fought back against corruption and bad policy at the FCC under the Obama administration, the last Trump administration, and the Biden-Harris administration.
