LGBTQ+ Activists: “Fight Trump’s Censorship Bills, or Don’t Come to Pride”
LGBTQ+ activists are calling out Democrats for supporting bills that would allow the government to remove queer and trans content from the Internet.
A coalition of over two thousand LGBTQ+ activists, artists and creators have signed a letter calling out lawmakers and civil society organizations for supporting controversial bills that would give the Trump administration and conservative states more online censorship and surveillance powers.

The letter calls on decision-makers attending Pride events to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA); a planned sunset of ‘the Internet’s First Amendment,’ Section 230; and a collection of state ‘age verification’ bills that would restrict and surveil access to websites and apps. Activists warn the bills would allow federal and state governments to force the censorship of LGBTQ+ content from the web at a time when queer and trans rights are under sustained attack from the Trump administration.
Prominent letter signatories include Rose Montoya, Lilly Wachowski, Joel Kim Booster, Steph Frosch, Kimya Dawson, Gabe Dunn, and RJ Aguiar.
“As the Trump administration continues its unprecedented assault on LGBTQ+ rights, there is no longer any doubt that these bills would be used to surveil, silence, and isolate our communities,” the letter states, noting that over 900 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed across the US since the beginning of 2025. “These dangers are real, and we need real allies to oppose them—not photo ops at a parade.”

Transgender rights activist, actor, model, and content creator Rose Montoya (she/they) signed the letter and said: “Real allyship means more than waving a flag at a parade. It means protecting our right to exist, speak, and thrive without fear. It means rejecting the dangerous, false narratives being weaponized against us, and seeing through the lies that frame our very existence as a threat. If you claim to stand with queer and trans people, then stand with us fully—and say no to censorship, no to surveillance, and no to the bills that aim to silence and erase us.”
“We will no longer tolerate elected officials who are only allies when it is politically convenient,” said actor, comedian, producer, and writer Joel Kim Booster (he/him), who signed the letter. “It doesn’t matter how many rainbow flags you put up or empty words about acceptance you preach if you push bills that would force queer youth back into the closet. Pride is about resistance, not your marketing.”
Signatory Gabe Dunn (he/him), a New York Times bestselling author, writer and filmmaker and co-host of Just Between Us a comedic variety show said: “It’s no longer useful when lawmakers and public figures show up at Pride like it’s a party, only to turn around and back legislation that endangers our lives. These too broad censorship bills—whether it’s KOSA, age verification mandates, or attacks on Section 230—are sinister attacks designed to silence queer and trans people and force us back into the shadows.”
“You can’t show up at Pride in a rainbow feather boa and talk about how much you support the LGBTQ+ community if you’re actively helping authoritarians like Trump attack our community and erase us from the Internet,” said Evan Greer (she/her), director of Fight For The Future, which organized the letter. “Bills like KOSA and attacks on Section 230 put kids in danger while giving violent bigots new ways to attack our safety and fundamental rights. I don’t want to see any Democrat who helps advance these Trump censorship bills pretending they care about us.”
